Typically a roller like you used works but it you didn't roll in straight rows you might not have kept it uniform .Depending on how long its been down, I would GUESS the 100# roller would help.

most of the major setting material company's all...
most of the major setting material company's all have something that can go down to a feather edge.(Mapei,Laticrete,Custom ) Your best bet is to check with one of them.

not that its the best option but ..cut out the bottom 12" of the board, patch the holes in the liner,(like a innertube) install new board.( might need to go with thinner board and mortar to flush it...
