Lightly scratch one of the joints with an old screwdriver tip. I suspect the grout color will be found under the white stuff, which I think will be only on the surface. Let us know. :)

You can tile before or after. Doing the tile first saves cutting around the island. Moving the island first avoids damage to the tile floor. :)

I'll add that most grouts used on floors contain aggregates that catch dirt even though the grout is "stain proof." Tonto's advice is right on. :)

I think tiled walls above T&G wood might look top heavy. To me tile looks heavy and is usually used as a wainscot. As least that's the way it was back in the day. ;)
