Thinset under cement board

Is it necessary to apply thinset under cement board before tiling ? I seem to be getting mixed views. Some say as long as you use enough screws, it's not necessary.

Do you think the Kerdi membrane is even necessary ? I heard a few people tell me it's not, just tile right on the sheetrock ! I appreciate all the advise. This forum has been so helpful to me !

I read somewhere that we shouldn't put the Kerdi membrane up the walls where we want to tile above the Jacuzzi tub platform because we have insulation with a paper vapor barrier behind that sheetrock...

I believe we are going to use the Kerdi membrane on the drywall and just the CBU for the tub surround decking (no kerdi membrane). Then just tile on top of the CBU. We've been told this will be fine....
