If you have a GOOD blade, you can, often make the "half cut," then flip the tile over on the back to make the finishing cut....all this with a fence, of course...:scratch:

If you can scrape it off down to the drywall with little or no damage...go for it. While a good unmodified is fine, I just use versabond....not highly modified and works quite well.
