One last thing - ditra may cost more in material but will save you in labor costs vs laying a backerboard.

You should be okay for laying ceramic tile:

From what we read here, I wouldnt have the guy lay the tile on the plywood or the wire...

Thanks Bob. How wet should I make the backerboard before putting it down? I've read to dampen the backer board so it doesnt suck all the moisture out of the thinset.
