You would get a better result by using a circular saw made to ride against a guide which you could fasten to the countertop. If you've not cut stone freehand before you will likely get a wavy edge...

Thanks John :) I must admit doing tile work before doing this wall helped in terms of thinking about the block layout to minimize thin pieces, getting everything level and plumb etc.
