It appears to me you simply cut the Kerdi Board too long so it won't fit inside the drywall. What am I missing?

"I pad the premade niches with scraps of Kerdi board to make the niche match
the tile size."

Are you talking about both vertically and horizontally? If you're using 1/2" Kerdi Board, are you...

Hmmm, I guess I didn't realize there's going to be some buildup just by overlapping the KerdiBand on the premade niche seams, too. Not a big deal when you're using tiles as big as in your install. ...

"you can install the niche any time you want."

Of course, but then if you want the grout joints lined up, it's basically impossible to do it before the shower floor tile, and wall tile is at least...

Custom Kerdi niches

I've installed prebuilt niches, and I also install what I call custom niches, where I tile up to a point, and then when I know exactly where the grout line will be I cut into the wall, install top...

OK just a heads up, if a manufacturer gives me advice, I take it. If a supplier gives me advice, I also take it, but along with a grain of salt.

I would not use Liquid Nails. I can't even...

Well if you've been RedGarding, then continue RedGarding I guess. I use Kerdi, but that's just me. I've never used RedGard, but I assume it can be used in niche cavities just like everywhere else.

The tiles are like this by design, or bad tiles? Doesn't matter I guess, shouldn't make much difference when grouting. I suppose if a corner was really out of whack you'd want to make sure you...

Looks great, that is exactly what I had in mind. Of course that is just my opinion! But I'd be happy with that either on a job or in my own home. I might have used a full height tile in the upper...

Redgard doesn't go on the porcelain insert (yes that is a terrible idea, lol). I guess it won't do any harm, but the point is it is the niche cavity itself that needs to be waterproofed. Get the...

Basically. The tile doesn't have to go in very far under the bar top (only 1/8" is enough). Then the grout joint on top can continue all the way to the edge, or very close.

Well no, I just assume there is waterproofing. Yes technically there will be some drying from the crack, but it's insignificant compared to the gaps around the edges of the insert. Of course it...

IMO it is only natural for there to be a grout joint (or caulk) against the riser.

For on top of the bar top, the tile should sit on a grout joint there as well, just like everywhere that tile is...

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the only way thinset is going to shrink is if it starts drying before it's set. Trapped between porcelain and waterproofing, that thinset is not going to be drying any...
