I would curtail the vinegar treatment. Scratch the surface of the grout with an old screwdriver or something else...

I have never tried to bond anything to GypCrete/lightweight concrete, etc. I have always removed it and replaced it with deck mud.

Over concrete you are limited to some sort of leveling cement or bonded deck mud. Plywood/Cement board won't do it. :)

Welcome aboard, Patrick. :)

Cement boards can wick water upwards, and that's probably what has happened. Replacing the shower is the only way I know to get rid of the mold. :)
