I would venture to guess that they used a no hub coupling that was not rated for copper to PVC ( no seal) and that might be why you have problems with the copper pipe

I have one similar to that one. Mine is wireless and I can view it on my iPad or my cell phone. It has come in very handy on more than one occasion. Anything inside of a wall it is great.
