You could remove the screws and Hardie and patch the liner. Still not a good situation but the pan liner glue does have a real good bond when patched correctly.

I'd make them like your alternative choice. The main thing is to keep the blade away from the edge 1/16 like he shows. Practice on a couple first, it's not hard to get the hang of it.

I use a tamper to pack the sand. I don't know about the minimum thickness but I would want a couple inches or more. You want the tiles or pavers to be supported well so they don't break or rock back...

Home Depot sells Custom brand caulk and silicone in their tile section. They don't sell all colors, just the most popular ones....
