Grouting a large space.

I need some advice. We had a contractor tiling a master shower. He got about 3/4 of the way finished with it (it is absolutely beautiful!), but we haven't seen him (or heard from him) in almost 3 months. Finally, we hired a new contractor. The problem is, our first contractor built in a shelf. We don't know how he planned on finishing it. My new contractor said that the gaps around the shelf are too big to fill in with grout, so he wants to put a metal strip around it. Is there something else we can do? I really don't want metal in my shower!!
