Glass Tile Substate

I'm getting ready to install a glass tile backsplash in my kitchen. I removed an old Formica backslpash that was starting to come lose and in the process I tore a lot of the paper off of the drywall. My question is... can I install the tile over the somewhat paper less drywall or should I install a layer cement backer board first?

Hi e-rock, welcome. Depends on how bad it is. If it's tore up all the way to the gypsum (white stuff) in alot of places, be good to replace it. If it's only a little bit, go over the whole thing with a skim coat of white thinset and let it dry. After it dries, go over it with a piece of sandpaper to knock down any ridges in the thinset. :)
