Kerabond unmodified vs modified
I’m sure this was asked before, but I could not find a clear answer.

I have a wall, part painted gypsum board, part cement board. I will be installing 8x8 and 12x24 tiles. I want to use unmodified Kerabond thinset as I have that already. Do I have to use modified thinset, or am I good with what I have?

What kind of tile are you installing? Is this a bathroom/shower/wet area, and if so, how are you planning to waterproof? More info about your project might help the community here advise...

Bathroom but not a wet area. The wet area is already done with kerdi and unmodified thinset. Ceramic tile 8x8 and 12x24.

If the cement board doesn't have a rolled on water proof coating the unmodified mortar should be just fine. Might double check your tile though, some manufacturers want their tile adhered with modified.

Also check the age of the mortar you currently have, and if the bag has been already opened for a while.

Mike, all manufacturers of CBUs recommend modified (ANSI A118.4) thinset mortars for use on their products. I'd also recommend a modified mortar for use over the painted drywall after you have abraded the surface.

Will the Kerabond mixed with water stick the tiles? Probably, but I'd still recommend you spend the 15 bucks for a bag of modified.

My opinion; worth price charged.
