We are currently redoing our bathroom and looking at adding at least one shower niche to our tub surround. We are currently debating whether we should build our own niche (the shower is currently at the studs) or adding a premade shower niche (like the shampoo shower niche from Daniel's Kitchen and Bath online).

Does anyone have any suggestions or experiences with premade shower niches vs. building your own.

The one concern is that the premade niche is only held in place and sealed with silicon, so we worry about water getting behind the niche. Is this really something to be concerned with?

Thank You!

Welcome, McNabb. :)

Dealer's choice. If you'll type niche into the Advanced Search feature and ask for Titles, you'll find a couple hundred threads on the subject and might see some photos that'll be helpful.

I don't care for a bead of caulking as the only waterproofing in any area of a shower, but there are effective methods of installing some of the pre-fab niches on the market. A lot of it depends upon the method of waterproofing you've chosen for the rest of the shower.

Attaching some of those niches with silicone if that's what the manufacturer recommends is not usually a problem. Still gonna be there when your grandkids come home from college.

Pick a niche or niche method you like, pick a waterproofing method you like, and our folks will help you get it installed properly.

My opinion; worth price charged.
