I'm helping a friend install 2x2 hex ceramic on 12x12 mesh sheets over concrete.

We are pouring SLC so we will have a super flat surface. I'm wondering if 3/16th V notch trowel will suffice? Or should we go a little larger on the trowel?

He purchased Mapei ultraflex1. I like to use the pookie with more latex. We are going over cork/concrete and heatmat.

Should we bump it up to ultraflex2 or 3.... or is that overkill?

The upgrade in thinset is always a nice bonus, but not a requirement.

Start with that trowel and check the coverage. If you are getting oozage, go down to a 1/8" square notch trowel. While working over SLC or CBU, be sure to use a damp sponge to wipe up the dust and dampen the surface as SLC and CBU are very thirsty and will suck the water out of that very thin layer of thinset rather quickly.

Yep, what Paul said.

I'd only add to notch small areas as the mortar can skin over very fast with a v-notch. Pull a sheet corner up every now & then to make sure your getting good transfer. :)
