View Full Version : Sealing a new Travertine Floor

We will be laying our honed filled 12 x 12 travertine tiles this weekend for our kitchen / dining room. I have read some suggestions that the tile should be sealed both before being laid and then after grouting. Comments? Any words to the wise before I start?

Suggestions of product? If it matters the tile is a very light tan.

Sealing will make grout cleanup easier. Just try to keep the sealer off the edges of the tile so the grout will stick in the grout lines better.

Debbie, do a water test on the tile before you do anything with the sealers,
typically on the honed and filled (also polished) you don't have to seal before you set the tile (BUT depends on the water test)

Water test - just put a couple drops on the tile and see how long it takes to absorb - if it absorbs very quickly (a minute or so) you need to seal before you set the tile - this step will save you a lot of trouble later.

I normally don't seal before I set the tile - I always seal before I grout.

I use Stonetech Heavy duty sealer with a 9" roller and just roll it on , let sit and hand wipe it after about 15 minutes let sit over night then grout.

Make sure to follow manufacture directions with any products you use.
