View Full Version : Tile Substrate Problem

Anyone have an idea how to fix this problem? Several years ago I installed 2x2 Porcelain Mosaic tile - thinset -over Cementitious Backer Board screwed to plywood - 5/8 T&G plywdd on 2x10s at 16" oc. I have since learned that a dry set mortar between the backer board and plywood should have been applied. It was well screwed to the floor but now - only in the winter - I get a slight crackling noise as you walk over the tile in the area near the water closet - no visible cracks in the grout. Is this a problem - or how could I remedy to the crackling sound?

Welcome to the forum, Sam,:)

There's really nothing you can do at this point, short of tearing it out and redoing it. I don't see any reason to do that until the job fails past the point of your tolerance. It may never get worse than that crackling sound you hear - or the grout and tiles my start to crack and lose their bond. Time will tell.
