just had a new cultured marble shower base installed and am wondering how to tile the walls? main problem is do we run the backer board flush with the lip of the base, or fur it out to go inside the pan. how do you seal the joint? I am concerned that if the shower ever backs up that it will overflow over the small 1.5 inch lip? any help would be geat

What kinda of backer and what kind of moisture barrier you using?

If you are using felt or plastic behind a backer you can drape it over the lip of your pan, then run the backer down to the top of the flange.

If you are using a surface applied membrane like redguard you can fir out your walls (if needed) and run the backer over the flange. Then apply the waterproofing to the backer.

If you are using a backer with the waterpoofing built in (like Denshield, Wedi) you can run it down to 1/8" of the flange and seal the gap with silicone or polyurethane sealant (depends on which one you using)

everything that Brannigan said and one more from me,

you could even possibly use Schluter - Kerdi (http://www.schluter.com/8_1_kerdi.aspx) as a waterproofing.
