First let me say this is a GREAT FORUM !!! :yipee:
This is my first shower , done a few floors and a few back splashes
so building this shower in the newley built poolhouse.have a few questions
1st - if I'm going to use cbu are they all pretty much the same or is one better than the other ?
2nd - if my cbu is going to butt up to my sheet rock , do you just use regular sheet rock mud or how does that work?
3rd-Do I need to put felt paper aginst the 2x4 walls behind the cbu ?
4th - If I build a shower seat out of pt wood and cover it with cbu and mud it in does it need to be painted with that red water proofing stuff as well as the rest of the cbu walls... :corn:

hey Blu,

welcome to the forum.

1) pretty much all the same, personal preference and location where one is more sold come into play, there are backerboards that are new like Wedi and Customs easyboard that are lighter to work with.

2) you can use a Alkali resistant mesh tape set flash it in with thinset. once tile is don't you can finish off the trim with drywall mud.

3) you wont need it if your going to do RedGard.

4) yes, you need to paint all walls and the bench with 2 coats of Redgard.

Hi Blu, Welcome to the Forum.
Do you have a first name?
1. I like PermaBase, but to each his own.
2. I'd use alkali resistant tape and thinset, and what ends up outside the shower skim out with drywall mud for a paintable surface.
3.&4. You need to choose a method of waterproofing your shower, either at the studs with a traditional pan, surface applied, or Kerdi. Here's a link ( to a thread from the Liberry that should explain things.
