Maybe this is bordering on masonry rather than tiling, but I suspect the concepts are the same and the pros here can help me.

My home is wrapped in redwood siding - flat, not overlapping.
I want to add a stone (the concrete preformed stuff) facade around the garage. Can I use the same concepts as an interior tiling project... e.g. apply a waterproof barrier like roofing paper, then 1/2" Durock, then mortar the pieces into place?

I did a small job like the one in the picture using durock, mason mix, and Harristone. I don't think the durock had enough surface area to bind the mud and rock together. I'd stick with the traditional lath and scratch coat method.

Yes, a water proof barrier like roofing paper would be advisable.
