View Full Version : tile over SUREWALL/surebond?

Anyone have experience with this? Or advice anyway?

I am getting ready to tile my rtub/shower surround. The back wall (house exterior) is finished in Surewall (maybe called "Surebond" now - maybe other names) - it is a rough cementitious surface on the face of concrete blocks (these blocks have styro beads in the aggregate - good R value and not as brittle, with good hold on anchors). Can I use a "heavy" thinset coat right over it? Should I use backer board and - what - glue and screws/plastic anchors? With a solid backing, can I get away with 1/4" backer board on this wall?

Thanks for any advice, and particularly ideas informed by experience.
