Do I need to install a cement backer first in my kitchen floor, if my house is 18 years old and the floor is very solid. There is linoleum there now.

Chuck~~ At the very minimum. Please give us some information about the floor. Is it on & beam or what?

It is 3/4 inch plywood on a post a beam.

Please give is your joists size, spacing, and unsupported span first off.

To answer your question though (permitting the above is good) you thinset and screw a cement back board to your subfloor and tile. You do not want to tile directly to a wood subfloor.
