When I was removing the tile from the old tub surround I noticed that the top two courses (bullnose and course below) look as if they had been back buttered, but no troweling. Why would this have been done and should I do it?

Hi Laura,

Back-buttering is a good technique where you are at a corner or the end of a surface and there is not enough room to comb out adhesive.

Sometimes you have to glob a little more adhesive on the back of a tile to get it level or even, or a slope the surface a bit.

That's my DIY experience. Others will chime in.

I'd agree with Paul, it may have been a situation where the trowel couldn't reach easily and it's often easier to butter the tiles than to comb the walls/corners.
