View Full Version : Sq Ft formula?

I have about 275 Sq ft.

My wife likes the pattern that the 12x12 inch tiles, offset with the 6x6 inch tiles produce.

How do I figure how many each of the 12x12 and 6x6 tiles I need for the total job?

Thanks Mike:)

Welcome Mike,

20% of 6x6 and 80% of 12x12

55 sf. of 6x6 and 220 sf. of 12x12 + waste

Hi Mike.........Welcome.
I would first figure the ratio of 6x6 to 12x12 tiles.
This of course depends upon the specific pattern.
knowing that 4 - 6x6 tiles cover the same area as 1 - 12x12 tile
if the ratio is four (6x6) to one (12x12) its an even 50%
50% 6x6 and 50% 12x12.

ah heck......... forget all that.
get yourself a cocktail napkin and a pencil..... :D
and draw your repeating pattern.....now draw a rectangle over an area figure out the sq.ft. of that rectangle and the ratio from there....got it ?
I hope this helps......... R.J.

Well seeing as I have done a few Pinwheels in my day,i'll share a secret. Its 50/50 but you are going to need to get an extra box of 6x6 and 2 extra of 12x12 for cutting purposes. perhaps more if your area is really cut up. Now i am not quite sure why it works out like this but it always does so i just put it down to Tile Gremlins :D
