After installing our Hardibacker with thinset, it appears that we still have a doorway that is not completely level with the rest of the floor. There is a slight rocking of the 8 inch limestone tiles we want to use. I would say the difference would be less than 1/8 inch per tile.

Should we use leveling compound over the whole floor with metal mesh imbedded in it, as we have been told? Or just use plenty of thinset and hold our breath?

Hi Red, less than 1/8"? I think the thinset for the tile will absorb the rocking. I don't follow the part about the door though.

Hi RS, Welcome. :) Please give us a first name, will ya?

I'm with flatfloor. An eighth inch can be handled with thin set. Put the piece down, and then pick it back up. You'll be able to tell whether you have full contact. If you need to add, you can back butter more thin set on the tile with your margin trowel.

It IS important to achieve full coverage with stone tiles.
