I have black galaxy tile loose on my counter. I have remove the tiles and cleaned them. The old mortar did not adhere well to the back of the tile.

Do I have to remove the old mortar before I install the tile? If so how much will have to be removed?

What type of adhesive or mortar is best for this type of repair? I have marine grade Epoxy, can this be used?

Thanks in advance.

If you don't remove the old mortar the fix will stand proud of the other tiles.

If you have epoxy and want to use it go for it, otherwise what you want is "thinset mortar" but I don't think you can buy just a tiny bit of it.

You could mooch some from a tileguy somewhere.:)

Hi Orlando, Welcome. :)

I use a white modified thin set for granite tiles. A good one is Versa Bond (sold at Home Depot).

Orlando, If it were my counter, I'd be more inclined to find out why the tile were loose in the first place. Was the counter not strong? Or pehaps just impropper installation? This is just a few of the reasons. Repairing it now may just mean you will fix it again in a few months.

While on the subject, would Ditra help our friend Orlando with his counter?

Depends entirely on what went wrong.
