We have a black ceramic tile floor with very dark gray grout. The grout had gotten dirty and turned whitish before I had a chance to seal it. I am going to try to clean the grout and then seal it, but if I'm not successful at cleaning it, Could someone please tell me what I need to do to put a new, thin layer of grout over the current grout, so that the new grout sticks to the old grout, and covers up the stained grout underneath?

Thanks

You will have to dig out most of the old grout to get the new stuff to stick. You cant just apply a new layer, it wont stick.

Hi Jeff,

If you intend to put in new grout, you're going to have to remove at least half - preferably 2/3rds - of the existing grout. Any less and you just can't count on the new grout sticking to the old.

What is that tile set upon? I wonder if you have an efflorescence problem.

Here's a link on the subject:

How about going over it with a grout stain/sealer? Kill two birds with one stone.
