View Full Version : Should I try acid wash?

I grouted my bathroom using Mapei Keracolor Sanded grout. The color turned out a little splotchy as it was the correct color in some places while darker in others. I don't think it looks bad and don't want to do any harm. I called the Tech Service # to get their opinion and they are sending me a colorant to use that will color the grout lines and seal them. I don't like what I've read about colorants as they appear to give a painted look. So I've ruled that out as I would rather live with the color as is than to have it look painted. Should I try a 50/50 vinegar wash or will this do no good? I grouted 3 days ago.

Try it, it won't hurt. Rinse well when you are done.

If it were me.... I'd walk on that floor a week or so longer... yer' grout color may straighten out on it's own after things get really really dry.

If that don't work.... then try what Jim sez.

I think it would be a good idea to give it a week or so and see what happens.

Does that mean I should wait on sealing it? Will sealing it lock the current color? Can you not do the acid wash once it is sealed?

Sorry for the questions. Sealing is the last step and I can officially close the book on this project. I'm a little eager. :yeah:

It may help,it probably won't do any harm, just be sure to rinse well.

I'm fair conservative Tom.... slow down, relax, don't seal it yet.... it's not going anywhere. Wait that week or so first.

Jest my thought :---)

You can always use a color stain over the grout. It will not only seal it but give you a consistant color through out

Hi Tom,

I have merged your two threads here, so if you have any other questions about this project, please post on this one. Thanks!

I'm with the others, wait a week and see how it looks. I'd probably go full strength on the vinegar, it's not very strong right out of the bottle. Rinse well like the others said. :)

So I've been watching the grout and I think it is about as good as it is going to get. It is kind of odd in that there is a correlation with most of the color difference. It appears as if the grout color is more consistent and correct at the intersection formed by 4 tile corners. The grout appears to be darker in the middle of a single grout line between 2 tiles.

Anyone seen this before or can explain why this might be?

Don't get me wrong, it looks good and I don't mind the way it turned out. It actually works well with the tiles I have. I'm just trying to figure out what caused this so next time I don't have the same issue where it might not be so forgiving.

I've posted an illustration in case I've confused anyone.
