View Full Version : To seal or not to seal...that is the question

I have just finished a glass block/tile shower and am now looking at the sealing of the grout. The glass block use a sanded mortar type grout and the wall tile is an unsanded grout...bright white.

I have read the forums and there is many conflicting opinions as to seal or not. This is a guest bathroom so it will not get a lot of use.

The shower was covered with Kerdi on all walls and floors so if water gets through, it will just eventually drain out.

Question 1 Is it worth it to seal or not?

Also, I am going to silicone caulk all corner, ceiling, floor joints.

Question 2 Is this worth doing or should I just grout them?

Thanks in advance for all opinions

I would give the grout several applications of an high quality impregnating "sealer" to facilitate ongoing maintenance. It really doesn't "seal" and it really won't keep the grout clean. But it will be easier to clean and keep your grout clean if "sealed".

And I'd caulk the corners. Silicon is one choice. So is a water-based acrylic caulk.
