We have some 18"x18" travertine tiles that we want to install on the kitchen floor of our house,
but are concerned with the strength of the stone.

We have contemplated selling/trashing the stone since we don't want to install it if it is not going
to last.

The tile will be installed over:
2x8 SYP joist 16" O.C. - spanning 8 feet - covered with
1/4 inch plywood (already installed) - covered with
3/4 inch indoor plywood - covered with
thin set - covered with
1/4 inch hardy backer with joints taped and staggered - covered with
thin set.

We will use 3/16 inch joints and a sanded grout.

We have used this method to install 12"x12" ceramic tiles successfully, but am concerned that
we will not have the same results with travertine.

Can anyone give us some advise as to whether or not the Travertine will hold up in our

Your 1/4" plywood adds nothing to this floor. I'd tear it out if I could get to it. The 3/4" plywood isn't enough for stone, you'll need another 1/2", screwed to the 3/4", not the joists.

Otherwise, you're fine.
