View Full Version : removal of sheet vinyl and luan

I want to tile my kitchen with 13" x 13" ceramic tiles. My house is 3 years old with sheet vinyl and 1/4" luan on top of 23/32" T&G plywood subfloor.

Can I install 1/4" hardibacker directly on the sheet vinyl OR should I first remove both the vinyl and 1/4" luan?

Is there any chance the luan is glued down which could make the removal process difficult?

Hi Rick, Welcome. :)

Luaun is a bad word in all of the flooring trades. The stuff is not stable and tends to delaminate. Vinyl is a bad word in the tile trade.

However, at risk of getting whacked by several of my associates, I don't know why you can't put the backer over the linoleum, using thin set to bed it and roofing nails to fasten it.

Stick around. There will be other opinions. ;)
