I want to install ceramic in my bathroom and laundry room. A friend of mine told me that I can install right over the vinyl. I though I should get some advise from the experts. Is this true? The vinyl does not feel like it is cushoned but I am no expert. I believe it is Armstrong vinyl. If I need to I can pull out some of th extra vinyl that I have in the basement for inspection.

If it is not a good idea to go right over the vinyl, do I need to tear out first or can I put a backer board or something else over the the vinyl? If I should tear out the vinyl what should I install?

What is recommended?

FHY - the house and vinyl are four years old.

Thank you

tiling directly over vinyl is not recommended . remove vinyl, verify sub floor make up, no cushioned layer, install 1/4 inch cbu over mortar with 1/4x1/4 notch trowel. then screw down cbu with special screws made for backer board. tile away!
