View Full Version : tape wonderboard corners or hydroguard?

02-12-2013, 10:11 PM
I'm ready to apply liquid membrane to wonderboard on my shower tub surround.

Wondering what is best? Mesh tape and thinset on wonderboard corners of bath shower surround or should I use fabric and Hydroguard?

Seems like the horizontal joints should be treated with thinset and mesh tape.
I also have a niche in the shower. Is it better to tape and thinset or use fabric and Hydroguard?

Hi K, :)

I think the fabric and membrane are better than tape and mud. Less build-up.

I had this question in another thread but not sure it was answered along with this. You are suppose to add thinset to the joints and tape them. Yet with redgard it was mentioned to use tape again in the seems. So are we to do both?

I did both mesh tape, mud, then 3 coats of redgard seems tight!

Most liquid membrane manufacturers require it's to tape and thinset our joints before using their fabric and membrane, but I've done it both ways and have not yet had a failure from either.

Definitely less buildup by only using membrane and fabric.

Welcome back, Ken. :)

Installing and finishing the CBU is a completely separate step from waterproofing the shower and each should be completed per the manufacturer's instructions.

My opinion; worth price charged.
