View Full Version : Back Splash Tile - Need to tape/mud sheetrock?

So we ripped out the old back splash in our kitchen which then required us to put new sheet rock in. I'll be the first to admit it's not a "perfect" sheet rock job. We have joints and in some areas they are 1/4 inch.

If i'm planning on tiling over this anyway do I still need to tape and mud the sheet rock joints, or can I just tile over? I'm planning on using 12"x12" mosaic brick patter sheets (w/2x4 tiles on them).

@bbcamp, thanks for your comment, so are you saying that these walls need to be perfectly flat?

For the most part the walls are flat but there might be some height deviation from one joint to the other of maybe 1/8".

Can it be made up by the thinset?
