Tile Contractor Web Sites

Might be time for another thread on web sites. It should be in the computer forum, but it might not be seen by all there.

Had a phone conversation with JonDon -- JD Tile -- yesterday on "SEO," which means Search Engine Optimization. Jon's site is very nice, easy to read and informational, but very little has been done to make it attractive to Google robots, and therefore the site never comes up.

I'm not picking on Jon. From time to time I've made remarks about other sites that are listed here in users' signatures. Few of them have been optimized as mentioned above.

You can view the "source" (code) of your site by going to the view menu in your browser and choosing "source" or "source code." With Firefox and maybe some others you can do control > u when the site is up in your browser. You can do the same with anybody else's site, too.

The top portion of the coded page is called the "head." In it you will notice several "tags," including a <title> tag. This is what robots see when combing your site. Jon's title turned out to be "Home," which is really useless information. The title should contain the name of your business and its location. JohnBridge.com's title doesn't contain location because it's an internationally used site.

But if you don't place information in your site that is probably going to be used when people do searches, you can forget about them finding you.

There are other tags. One more really important one (all web geeks won't agree) is the "description" tag. It looks like this: <meta name="description" content="John Bridge Tile -- Houston -- Tile showers and floor. Schluter Kerdi Expert"/>

I might have to break that up a bit because the site won't accept scripts, but you can see that the information there is valuable, and the search bots will see it and index it.

There are many other ways to attract customers to your site. I will entertain questions -- and comments from those who I'm sure know more about this than I do.

One last thing: All of you should be trading links with each other.

Got this PM from my webby person sunday evening....

we need more pics!!! more more more!! And some content. Did you have content on tileporn or not? If not I can scout around for some content and punch it up with keywords.

I want you to come up in searches. Do you have a google places page? If not, let me set one up for you. If you do, let me know the username and pw for it. (in my yahoo mail). I'm going to do a sitemap and also set you up on analytics.

Do you have a linkedin acct? Also, I need either your existing youtube acct or you/we need to create one that's "business like" for your site -- all I mean is with relevant vids tagged correctly. We'll leave the snarky stuff for the tileporn website... and we'll tie them all in (btw, I bought a couple of keyword rich names that we'll point at the site and see which ones bring in the traffic and we'll just not renew the others.

------------

Stuff like that, right?

oh, so I now have a site, well, actually 2. She's pretty bossy and might even force me to list it here.

I couldn't make my title change. I will need to do some more reading. I have the platinum seo package for wordpress and it doesn't seem to be updating, or I have missed a check box or something else. Right now is using the title from my home page instead of a better descriptive title for the bots. =( I'll work on it more later after reading more. I don't want to screw it up

Hello all,

Let me first give a brief introduction to avoid confusion.

My name is Daniel N. (not to be confused with Daniel A., our owner) and I handle 4 websites for our company (StoneTooling.com and its sister sites) as well as an eBay store on top of all the marketing for web and our showroom.

On top of that, I run my own site (angryweb.net).

I have been building websites and making them look good to Google for years so I would be happy to field any questions and take a look at some of your sites. We'll keep it all in this thread so other can benefit from the same information.

Let me know how I can help and I'll be checking in through out the next couple of days

Wow! I click on the "source" for mine and it looks like chinese to me. I'll have to spend some time understanding this, and figuring out where to put the right words. This will be interesting.

Todd, how is your site being hosted? I see it was put together with iWeb on the Mac platform but images seem to load slow and loading time of a site can really hurt SEO.

There are a lot of 3rd party tools out there, most of them free, that can help you build stronger SEO in iWeb.

Your site actually looks great but Google is less likely to index it higher for those small reasons.

Also, everybody, make sure you're using strong key words and try to make changes to the site once in a while or else Google forgets about it. That's why a blog is really important.

Glad to have the help, Daniel, but slow down a bit. Let's take things one at a time. They are tile setters (like me), remember?

I'm pretty sure the All in One SEO package for Word Press needs to be added in or activated, Jack. Check with Shifty (Dave) aka oakview on the forums. He built JB.com using WP.

Okay, so I've mentioned only two tags to be found in the head of every web page. The title tag is usually always there, but the description may not be (it does need to be added, though). The head starts with <head> and ends with </head>. That forward slash always means end in HTML, which is what you're looking at. HTML means Hyper-text markup language, otherwise known as code. That code is what tells someone's browser what to display on the front of the page. Robots like HTML and text. Pictures are less important than text as far as robots are concerned. Most robots don't even see them.
From the top of the page down, look line by line for the <title> tag. after the tag you should have some useful info pertaining to your business. The title in the head does not have to agree with the tile of the page that everyone sees, BTW. It should contain the name of your business, the word "tile" and your location. That's at a minimum. You can have a little more, but Google will only use about ten words of it. When you find the title come back on and tell us what it says now.,

Google, BTW, controls better than fifty percent of the market in search, and all the others follow along behind. Get your site ranked on Google, and the rest (Yahoo for one) will come around automatically. You don't even have to mess with them.

Ignore Gueuze, not when he's talking about tile but when he's talking about web sites.

Daniel, my wife set up my website and she's more of a designer than a techy. I guess Dotster hosts my site. Are you saying that Google doesn't like iWeb?

I figured it out. Thanks for the heads up JB. Playing with the seo plugin was just confusing me. Its actually very simple with WP. Under general settings you type in what you want in the title box and it automates it. When I first filled out all the information I just put my company name there with no tag words. Still gotta work on the meta, one thing at a time...hehe

Todd,

Google doesn't care who or what made the site. They are only interested in content.

Here is your title as it stands: <title>Tile &amp; Stone</title>

It could be: <title>Todd Nielsen Tile and Stone - Minnesota Twin Cities Area</title>

See what you can do with just the title tag?

I would love for anybody to take a look at my site, and give my any feedback they have.

And also the JB link on my site takes me to JB.com not the forum. The lady that made my site did it on a barter deal and I don't really want to bug her with adding /vbulletin if you guys can let me know how to do it my self.

I do have WP and for a while when I opened my site on my computer I had an editing bar at the top, and could change the text and pics my self. That bar is now gone

Thanks, John. I'll pass this on to my wife. Actually I should learn how all this works, because if she's not around I'm lost when it comes to computer troubleshooting. I don't even know how to "get behind the scenes" of my website. It's neat to be able to "view" other peoples sites and see what keywords and descriptions and titles they're using. We've got some tweaking to do here.

Levi, I like the wording in all your paragraphs in the Home page and About Us page. It says what you do and it's not too long, looks professional. I've been in the process of re-writing that stuff on my page for a while now. I'm a better setter than I am a writer.

Daniel , this is what the programer told me few years ago , but I told him and still keep to have the home page in a way contrary to SEO . It seems to me that personality or who you are gets confused or replaced by the robots. Not that I disagree with what you are saying , you are marketing your company , not your personality .

I'm with you, Levi. I don't know the first thing about the behind the scenes stuff with my site and would love to know how I can improve....in fact....I am in desperate need of an updating and would love to hire it out but just don't know how to go about hiring someone. My guy is very limited.

Any takers on a full website remodel?
