Mapei grout/caulk colors

Just a general question:

Anyone comment on how well the Mapei grout colors (sanded) typically matches their caulk color products?

I've had bad experience with Custom Building products on this front before. Typically I end up buying a completely different Custom caulk color to match their grout!

Wondering is Mapei is any better on this front?

I've only use colors such as biscuit, but it worked pretty well.

Mapei's sanded caulk will match the sanded grout almost perfectly. Unsanded grout will likely look a few shades whiter than sanded caulk.

Sometimes they match really well, sometimes they're not even close. I've had multiple tubes of the same color not match each other or the grout, no kidding.

Before caulking, I often squeeze a bit out on a chunk of scrap tile and allow to dry to test the color. Their caulks do take grout stains fairly well, should you need to go that way

I've been getting most of the grout caulk I use from www.groutgetter.com. They have any color, any brand (at least all the ones I've heard of). They even make those special colors that are hard to get sometimes. Of course you have to pay a few dollars for shipping, but it comes straight to your door in two or three days, and I've never had a problem with it matching the grout.

My experience with Mapei grouts and matched caulks is that they are pretty consistent. Usually, I can't see a noticeable difference.

I just used mapei pearl gray 19 on 400sf of porcelain and 2 tubes of their matching caulk for tile/wood transitions. Matched pretty well. I did make a sample board first to check the color. Also, it dries down a couple shades darker than it comes out of the tube, so let your sample dry overnight before viewing.

I'm reading - it looks like the Mapei colored caulks are latex - is that ok for doing the joints in a shower? I thought it had to be silicon?

It's okay to use Latex caulk in a shower as long as it's not being used in any areas subject to standing water. Silicone is always your best option in the shower and a must where the shower floor and walls meet. If you are looking for matching grouts & silicones you could do TEC.

ahhh poop! I already bought the mapei grout and caulk - and opened the grout to do a test batch. I'm guessing I can't return it now!!!

What do you think my chances are of finding a TEC caulk to match the opened grout I have? I'm using the Mapei Ivor color.

I hate to post on an old thread, but I just went through this process and thought this is relevant and might be helpful to others. I grouted my tile with Mapei Keracolor S in Chamois. Even with a low water initial cleanup and a 50/50 water/vinegar scrub after-wards, it was lighter than the sample. It was acceptable to us, however, we had to use Mapei sanded caulk in Ivory for a near-perfect color match.

Lessons learned:
  • Consider a grout one shade darker when selecting grout
  • Consider a matching caulk one shade lighter than your grout

That being said, a few years ago, I did a shower using Polyblend and the grout and caulk matched.
