Hall of Hexagons

http://www.drking.plus.com/hexagons/index.html

A pretty cool place that has been in my bookmarks for a long time. Lots to wrap your head around, or bang your head against. It's everybody's favorite polygon, the hexagon!

My buddy the tile maker found this sit doing research for an installation he was being asked to make. i was consulting (for free) from an installer perspective and trying to balance production and installation issues.

Cool math, theory, history, a tile geek smorgasboard, or something.

Here's the pic that really bends my head-

It's all one tile, just oriented in different ways. It's a real life demonstration of a concept called the tesselation of hexagons. From the Canary islands. Can somebody make some of these so I can put them in!!

Umm, let me put it this way. Can someone please want to pay for this floor so he can make them and I can put them in? That better.

Unfortunatley, making a product fo rwhich there is no market has it's drawbacks. (just don't tell those mudboxers I said something so business-like- )

Gueuze,
I just sent a request for information to the city manager of Puerto de la Cruz and asked for more information about this sidewalk and the supplier. IF I have any luck by this avenue, I'll share what I learn with you,... after I get my own patio done. Fan-friggen-tastic tiles!!!!!!
Thanks,
Shaughnn

Oh, yeah, different issue, that.

So, izza friend, but not a really good friend, eh?

Those are neat tiles, though.

The tile only has one pattern. The print is what throws you off.

A very close friend of mine teaches math at a local magnet school. Super smart guy, loves to sit and talk math kinda smart. He's done roofing for years during his summer break, but this last year he worked with us. He loved the math aspect of tile work. Tessellating the plane is now something he hopes to do every summer. I sent him a link to your first post, gueuze, he'll love it.

That's right, one tile. Here it is making a different pattern-

This whole thing came from thinking about making a repeatable mosaic of various sized hexagons that would look random but isn't.
something like this-

except that this is actually the same hexagon repeated.

Also kind of like this stone floor from Dal-tile I put in-

I'm getting closer. These tiles are installed at "Paseo de las Palmeras", which is a tourist promenade, which runs down the center of Avenida de Aguilar y Quesada. If my buddy Google and I can track down a UPC code by morning, I'll let y'all know.

And here is another mathematician's article about this same pattern, as a teaching aid in his classroom.

Question

Shaughnn, did you ever find a source for those hexagonal tiles? (Planning a patio and would love geometrically/mathematically interesting tiles available commercially!)
