Grout space between tiles - 1/4" or 3/8"

Is the grout space for looks only?

I am debating 1/4" versus 3/8" spacing. Is there a right amount of spacing?

Evan, use whatever floats your boat. Grout width varies anywhere from 1/16" (or less) up to 1/2" or more, but 1/4" and 3/8" are probably the most common. Note that irregularity of tile size may limit how narrow you can go, but 1/4" and larger should work with darn near anything.

whoops: meant to say 1/4" and 3/16" are most common.

Aesthetics is one thing but there are also general guidelines based on the size, type and consistency (squareness, edge imperfections, thickness, bevels, crowns, etc.) of the tile.

What kind and size of tile are you doing? I haven't used a grout line bigger than 3/16" in well over five years.

Can we ask what size tiles you are planing on and if you have a pattern in mind?

Or if you have multiple-sized tiles for your pattern....if so, you might be (depends on pattern) bound by the math-work that determines the grout width for you. If this is the case, tell us what you have and we'll talk you through it.

I am using three differnet size tiles. 8in sq, 8 x 16 in, and 16 in sq. The pattern is complicated.

I went with 1/4 inch spacing because the tile sizes were 1/8 shorter in the 8 in direction.

Thanks to everyone for their input.
