Porcelain Garage Tiles?

Aside from plastic or rubber, does anyone know of what tiles are used on a garage floor? I've heard that porcelain tiles are used because they are stronger and the color is throughout the tile. Does anyone know what works best and who might make them?

As long as the slab under the tile is thick enough, any tile will work, need 100% thinset coverage, any glazed ceramic or porcelain with a PEI rating of 4 or 5 is fine, 5 is better.

Honestly I run a garage web site that sells plastic and rubber tiles along with a lot of other garage stuff. I'm getting requests for other tile options "like the dealers have" --- I just don't know what it is or where to get it...?

Any tile showroom, there isn't any specific one made for garage floors, any Porcelain will do, or any glazed ceramic with a PEI of 4 or 5.

I would recommend staying away from a "glazed" tile in places that are often wet or snow-covered (like a garge floor) because as was mentioned, they can become slippery.

A garage floor could benefit from similar tile that is used in commercial kitchen floors with the traction nubs. At the very least, it should be a matte finish.

I am putting through-body procelain tile in my garage, with Ditra underneath for thermal expansion (heated slab) and water-proofing (room underneath) reasons. I will let people know how durable it is in about 10 years or so :-)

I plan to use an epoxy grout or something like Spectra-lock to resist staining from road grime, tires, or oil leaks.

One thing I am still trying to decide is how to finish the door area. Should I stop the tile just inside the garage door, or continue it out under the door like the concrete does? I was planning to use a Schluter ramp strip along that exposed edge (and I wish they came in 9' or 10' lengths!).

When picking out those tiles, you might wanna consider the tile's coefficient of friction (COF). The higher the number, the more slip resistant it is. A .6 or higher COF under wet conditions will keep the slip hazzard down.
