tile over tile?

Hi all,

first of all I love this site

I know this subject has been done to death but here's one more.....

I'm retiling my front entryway. The tile is in excellent condition and I really don't want to jackhammer it out. If I use a membrane (Ditra?) over the old tile and then place my new tile on top of that would that be suitable? Also does slate make a good entryway tile? What should I look for if I want to get multicolored slate? Last question: In my previous tiling jobs my grout discolored, if I use a sealant will that keep the color?

Thanks for your help

If the tiles that are in place are sound in strength and the sub floor is sound why not tile straight onto tile using a latex modified thin set.

Might get some different responses to this but this is what we would do in the UK.

Grout:

I'm with Jase on that one if the tile is in perfect condition. You could add an anti-fracture layer if you wanted to, but I'd just use the toughest thinset you can get your hands on.
~ could even burn the surface of the existing tile with a thin layer of thinset, let it dry. That will give really good bite when you set.

Best of luck!

That being an UNmodified thinset mixed with a liquid latex additive. For even more bite, you might take a sander and rough up the surface of the existing tile.
