A Warning About Stand and Spray Sealer

Since I've been in this forum, there have been several debates about this product (Tile Perfect's Stand & Spray Sealer). I've been against this product since I heard about it, but now I find out that it's been for the wrong reasons. Here are just a few posts from another forum that I go into. The urls for the threads these posts come from will be at the end of this post:

This product did work very well. However at the expense of me being Hospitalized within 1 hour of use. Yes - More than "sufficient" ventilation was used.
The Acute damage to my lungs had me on oxygen respiration for 4 days.
The side effects from this product are NO JOKE. They are DEADLY.
We will not know for weeks just how extensive the long term damage is to my lungs - not if - how much damage.
My family was traumatized with the thought of losing me to this chemical poisoning.
Needless to say - Home Depot has been contacted.
Now - this Manufacturer must be held accountable and STOP risking the lives of it's consumers.

Last Saturday I used 1 can of Tile Perfect Stand n' Spray in a small bathroom with the overhead vent fan on & the door open for air, (which did not help). Needless to say I just got released from the hospital due to breathing problems, chest pains, etc. I'm still a little lightheaded 5 days later. The warnings on the label suck! The stuff actually smelled pretty good, scary huh. I wish I found this site before I sprayed. Please stay away from this product, I'm SURE this will be taken off the market.

We recently remodeled our bathroom and just yesterday my wife used Tile Perfect Stand and Spray Grout Sealer that I purchased at home depot. Our bathroom is only 40sqft so application took 5 minutes, but no more than half an hour later she complained that she was short of breath and her chest was tight. After a night spent at the emergency room she is still at the hospital today and may be looking at another day or so. The only precaution on the can was "avoid breathing vapors" and all was done to ventilate the area but in a small bathroom its difficult to avoid. As of right now she's diagnosed with pneumonitis- just a lung inflamation however this can cause other infections and possibly pulminary edema. I've read other similar complaints of this product and am just trying to make others aware of the dangers of this product. It may appear to be a perfect solution to your sealing problems but the possible effects on your health need to be carefully considered.
Good luck

I saw on another forum where a woman had just started a law suit against the spray manufacturer claiming her husband contracted some form of lung cancer attributable to inhalation during application about 2 years ago. Dont know how far they will get, if its just a fishing expedition, but be forewarned.

Thanks for the info Bill, I have used something similar to that. Not by choice. Personally I don't like the stuff.

Bill, I just tried to bring up the MSDS on Stand N' Seal but couldn't get to it on the Roanoke Companies Group website. Have you (or anyone) been able to find it? If so put a link to it here. I'd sure like to see their disclosure statement as to the contents.

Our friend Brian (bljack) found the MSDS - wasn't easy but after 90 minutes of work on his part here it is. Stand-N' Seal MSDS . Be sure to check out Section VI -- Health Hazard Data.

No wonder people getting sick.

Wow, I used this stuff one time about 1yr ago to touch up my shower tile grout. Not sure of it's affectiveness as it was only a preventative measure, the house was 5yrs old at the time.

Afterwords I thought I had a bit of broncitis or something as I was having coughing fits and slight breathing problems Now I think that was this may have been the cause.

I have a very open bathroom w/ 10' ceiling and I had both the French Doors open, the fan above the shower and tub area was running and the fan in the commode area was running. And I was wearing a 3ply surgical face mask (wife makes me take them with me when I travel to China.)

I'll never use that stuff again

Two days ago after first seeing what Bill had posted in another thread about this, I was at H.D. so I picked up a can of this stuff to read the label. I was shocked to see what I was reading, but the propane stood out in my mind. Wow! And the explosion hazard!

And as one unsuspecting customer was searching for some juicy pre-mixed caulk, I mean grout, on one side of me, up on the other side comes a local flooring competitor to grab the top row of the display stand (18) cans of stand and seal with him. I casually asked him if they had any problems with coughing or breathing when using the stuff. He said, "No, but we open a door and a window and run a fan when sealing". So I asked him, "Well you still breath the stuff even if a fan is going, is the smell pretty bad"? He replied, "You just get used to it after awhile". Wow, I can't imagine how much of that stuff he's breathed in if he's buying 18 cans of this at a time. Sounds like only a matter of time before the stuff is pulled from the shelves.

Good thread, Bill! Thanks for the awareness.

I never even thought about that-- I've been more concerned with the health risks involved, but you're right. Can you imagine someone up this side of the Mason Dixon line during the wintertime using this stuff on a job site with a salamander in the next room?

While I hated chemistry in college more than any other subject, looking closer at some of the ingredients was very interesting. The c8-c9 petroleum hydrocarbon solvent running at 80% of the weight of the product is naphtha. It's at 80% of the product by weight and I could not find any listed aerosol products containing it in concentrations higher than 10% where as most were below 5%. Products like Krylon paint. I asked my wife what she thought "proper ventilation" meant and she replied "open a window." I'd bet most people unfamiliar with a product will think that way. If anyone ever got naphtha solvent at a paint store, could you imagine putting a few ounces it into an aerosol and spraying it all over the room with just a window open? No wonder people are getting sick. It is biodegradable, but has a half life of 1-10 days, so it can linger for quite a while.

I'm glad I found this site. I just spent three nights in the hospital after using a can of 'Spray n Seal' from 'Tile Perfect'. I was sealing a tub surround in a small bathroom with no window, I ran a fan but it was impossible not to inhale. I was having something that looked like a major asthma attack (I don't have asthma) and had a fever and couldn't drive myself to the emergency room. My fever broke a few hours later and I was treated with steroids then held for a couple of days to rule out pneumonia (two CT scans and a brachio-something where they scraped stuff out of my lungs to send to a pathologist) they found nothing that could be the cause except for the grout sealer. I'm amazed that I can't find any mention of a lawsuit when searching, I'm sure there will be some. This is a dangerous product. If anyone has more info with problems, please contact me. Boy am I glad I found this thread! I just bought a few cans today to use this weekend! Needless to say it's going back and I'll seal the grout the old fashioned way.

Thanks!

Too bad I don't practice law anymore - I'd end up with every cent Tile Perfect has or ever will [ready to be sheared]...one of my former colleagues will no doubt clean up on this....

I was just thinking about trying some of that stuff. It seemed almost too good to be true. Thanks for the info.
