Modified vs Unmodified Thinset

Modified vs Unmodified Thinsets What is the difference between modified and unmodified thinsets? When should you use a modified thinset? Is a modified thinset for all floors and substrates? Does a modified thinset already have the additive added to the mix already? Does a unmodified thinset need additive and how much? Can it be half and half? And what about Superflex is that modified and does it really flex like the name implies? Or Versa Bond is that good for just about everything?

Hi JW, modified thinset has a latex additive in the power where unmod is just mud with no latex in it. You can add latex to it or just water. Most of the time mods are used for porcelain or unmod mixed with additive. Yes super flex is a modified thinset. Depending on the substrate concrete or cbu you can use an unmod if it's ceramic. I use mod for everything, except kerdi and on top of ditra.

Mike:

I will be installing a porcelan tile on Ditra and it is recommended that an unmodified thinset be used. Now my question would be do I use an additive or just mix with water? And to what consistency?

Hi JW, you want to use unmod, just with water. Mix to the normal consistency. With porcelain, I will flat trowel the backs.

Hi JW, use full set. It's an unmodified. That's what you want to use over the ditra. JW, I merged your threads. Lets keep all the questions for the same project on one thread so we can keep track of it.

I believe it's modified with latex. I told the guy at the supply house too. He insisted it would work. So what is a good brand to buy that is unmodified?

JW, TECs unmodified is Full Set. I use it all the time with ditra, the Sturdi Flex will work but it will take for ever to dry. Use the Full Set!
