Stand 'n Seal?

So the HD guy tried his best to sell me on a new product they have by Tile Perfect called Stand 'n Seal. Spray On grout sealer in an aerosol can. Says... well he swore it gives 15 years protection... uh oh sure. So I asked how long it's been on the marked. He says just a few months, he thinks. So any of you pros got insight on this... since my wife drew the short straw for the grout sealing job I thought I'd check into this to see if it's legit since it's $9+ a can and I'd need several or one bottle of the normal sealer...

thoughts?

thanks

tile perfect (I guess they picked that name, cause the tile is still perfect after you take it of the floor two weeks after installation )
the name sounds great, the product is garbage, at least the premix stuff
and I say it again, I'm nobodys guinea pig

Hi Chris,

I don't know what to think. Similar products have been on the market for several years, and the manufacturers claim they've been tested and they work, but as far as I know they don't. At least I don't think they work that well. It's just too easy. It's a "silver bullet," and as we all know, silver bullets have never worked for anyone but the Lone Ranger.

I'll tell you this: Tile Perfect is the same company that markets "pre-mixed thin set" at Home Depot, along with that new sensational grout in a can that I can't think of the name of at the moment. Shakey.

Hi Chris, I have never used it, I did see the display at HD a while back and just shook my head as I walked by. I should have took the time to read the label, I will next time. Of course they are selling convenience since you can stand while appying the sealer. I would think you still need to get down on the floor to wipe off the tile. I personally would stick to what I know is good, Stone Tech and Aqua Mix. Stone Tech can be bought online right here in the TYW online store.
I agree with John, "Tile Perfect's" other products aren't very impressive, I don't have much hope for this one.

Subject - spray applied grout sealers

When we bought the tile for our floor and backsplash, the gal helping us sold us 3 cans of "Easy Care" 'Grout Shield'. Each good for 800-1000 linear feet (as stated on the can). Haven't used any of it. (sealed the backsplash travertine and grout with a sponge brush application of a penetrating sealer, multiple coats)..

Any feedback on this "easy care" product?

well for grins and giggles I bought one can to test in the closet... well no thanks. It's (insert foul language remark here). Builds up on the tile, doesn't coat or spray well and didn't even 'evaporate' off the tile and stay on the grout like the HD guy said it would. (someone will have to explain that one to me... evaporate off tile and not grout... uh sure)

He asked for me to report back and I shall.

oh and I only did around 4 tiles or so... me and my three dogs have resorted out to the office. That stuff wreaks like you wouldn't believe. Air evacuating the house before the wife and 1.5yr daughter get home. EEEEWWWW!!!!

The wife isn't going to like it but she's applying the CBP sealer like at the old house.

again thanks to all that have or are giving out advise on this message board. It's been a huge help and my wife thanks you!!! seriously!

Oh for you pros... what due you think a 806sq ft w/ 18" tile job labor would run? (again here is picture half way through. http://www.cmccotter.org/morning_vie...le_install.jpg ) Simple layout and walls were very true. Floor prep was a 'full' day for me. Ground down a 12" circle high spot by 1/4" at peak. Floated self leveling compound in the hallway for 4' area and sanded down entire area for with floor sander. Oh and one crack with isolation membrane.

Just wondering what I saved. Oh and perk for me... I've sold the tile saw for what I paid for it. Free rental, not to shabby.

again thanks folks.

18" over a slab will get about $6 per sq ft around here. I just heard from a lady that got 800 sq ft of 16" tile done for $3 per sq ft though. That's real cheap !!!

As for the Tile Perfect sealer..I read the label this morning while picking up some thinset from HD. It's say the excess " will evapoeate off of the tile" . Hmmmm...Something about evaporating sealer doesn't add up

I'll stick with my Aquamix

Nice job Chris, hope you made those cuts before selling your saw.

I agree with Jason, at least 6 bucks a ft, I'd hate to see the 3 dollar a ft job.

i was looking around the site for the best thing to seal my grout with and stumbled on this thread. How ironic.
i can fully attest to the fact that this stuff absolutely does not work.
i have spent two days on my hands and knees scrubbing the grout in my kitchen. this grout was "sealed" with stand and seal. My tile guy used it. i would use the term tile guy loosely since he is the same guy that ruined my master bath and bedroom with a leaky master shower. ( have a thread for that too).

Stand and seal DOES NOT WORK. that should clarify anyones questions.
almost done with scrubbing grout and will seal it properly soon. i know what cinderella felt like with the evil step sisters.

This is a great site.

I recall looking at the label and concluding it was some kind of a penetrating hydrocarbon wax - doesn't sound like it would stand the test of time except in a low insult situation - dry interior vertical wall, not exposed to steam, grease or smoke - but then what do I know?

Any opinion on HD's other products - Tilelab sealers for grout and stone? (I'm returning the ones I bought unopened - and will wait for the stonetech to get here.) PS what is the best stonetech cleaner for cleaning old grout in prep for new sealer?)

I would stay away from the stand n seal grout sealer. My boyfriend used it and the first day came down with flu like symtoms. We thought nothing of it, and when he felt better he finished the bathroom, and 20 minutes after using the product came down with flu like symtoms again. Except this time he couldnt breath, ached all over so bad he couldnt walk, felt pain in his kidneys and the symtoms are still persisting, 3 days later, No sufficient warning as needing to wear a mask, room was well ventillated, and are contacting the company for further explaination!

My husband and I used (4.5) cans of the Tile Perfect Stand n' Spray on the recommendation of the Home Depot sales associate. We didn't feel any symptoms while spraying, but immediately after, my husband felt a tightening in his chest, difficulty breathing and especially if he took a deep breath, he would start coughing. Since he did the spraying, he felt the effects first. He said that his knees felt weak and he felt nauseated. I started feeling bad maybe an hour after, but my symptoms were not as severe. Still, I felt bad enough to want to go to my local quick care. Since they weren't open that late at night, I called the 24-Hour Emergency Phone at 800-424-9300 and all they said was to go to the emergency room. They weren't helpful at all because I asked what I should be telling the doctor as far as the chemical that may have caused these reactions and they said to bring in the can. We waited until the next day and it seems that the symptoms diminished. We did not stay in the house that was sprayed. I think that played a big part in our recovery. If we had to stay in the house that was sprayed, we would most likely be in the same boat as Bonnie's boyfriend. Even two days later, we don't feel 100% after using this stuff. I agree that there is not enough warning to the user. It says to "avoid breathing vapors," but unless you hold your breath or are wearing a gas mask, I don't see how you can avoid that. It's also nice to know that this stuff is "harmful or fatal if swallowed," but doesn't point out that it is also harmful if inhaled. I'm not going to drink it or huff it, but I do have to breathe. It's supposed to "evaporate harmlessly" but apparently not to humans. I guess it works as indicated, but I don't recommend it because of health concerns.

Last Saturday I used 1 can of Tile Perfect Stand n' Spray in a small bathroom with the overhead vent fan on & the door open for air, (which did not help). Needless to say I just got released from the hospital due to breathing problems, chest pains, etc. I'm still a little lightheaded 5 days later. The warnings on the label suck! The stuff actually smelled pretty good, scary huh. I wish I found this site before I sprayed. Please stay away from this product, I'm SURE this will be taken off the market.

This product did work very well. However at the expense of me being Hospitalized within 1 hour of use. Yes - More than "sufficient" ventilation was used.
The Acute damage to my lungs had me on oxygen respiration for 4 days.
The side effects from this product are NO JOKE. They are DEADLY.
We will not know for weeks just how extensive the long term damage is to my lungs - not if - how much damage.
My family was traumatized with the thought of losing me to this chemical poisoning.
Needless to say - Home Depot has been contacted.
Now - this Manufacturer must be held accountable and STOP risking the lives of it's consumers.

Actually a couple of company's now make the Spray on tile sealer. Answered a couple of posts a month or so back about the product. Grout will stain after using the product, it is totally ineffective. Once of the manufacturers of one of the brands also sells a spray on stone sealer. If you read the can and the msds, it is the identical stuff. Only thing it is good for is a quick headache, possible cheap high, or even an explosion if you use in a kitchen without ventilation. Very flammable. If it seems to easy, probably doesn't work.

We have been sealing all off our jobs with Easy Care for over two years now. I can charge for sealing and get to apply it right after grouting. No waiting 72 hours for the grout to cure. Goes on easy and doesn't leave any residue on the tile.
In the parking lot of the supply house we sprayed initials on the concrete and over a year latter when it had rained you could see where the sealer was applied.

I, the help or any customer has had any problems breathing due to application of the sealer.
I also leave every customer with a bottle of Custom cleaner/sealer and if it is a tub surround or shower they also get a squeege.

Very Importantant

I recently used stand n' seal. Within in 20 minutes I could barely breath. Long story short.............. I was hospitalized by morning and my oxygen level was below 70% !!! It should be above 95%. If you want to use this product, you better have a proper resporator! Just hope this saves someone from going to the hospital too!
