Deflection Question

Have a new (to me) home with 4x12 DF joist 48" OC with 2x6 T&G DF subfloor. Max span is 12'.

I keep getting different opinions on its suitability for tile. It's open to conditioned basement under and all looks fine, is level, and feels bounce free.. but...

Any thoughts on its limitations or possible correctives?

I'm guessing, but you're probably in CA or at least on the west coast. This configuration was evaluated, and, with the addition of a layer of plywood for compatibility and stability, then either a membrane or cement board, you should be able to tile it with a ceramic. I don't think it would work with a natural stone, though. Somebody will provide the details and confirmation, but I think you'll be okay.

Hi John,

Jim is right. Years ago we had an engineer onboard who ran the numbers on your floor setup. Do as Jim instructs, and you're good for tile, not stone tiles.

Thanks Jim and John.

Yes, it's in Oregon and would be getting a porcelain top most likely under... 24" (??)

So, 1/2" ply + 1/4" backer board or Ditra or perhaps the Durock membrane?

Will be putting infloor heat in the mix as well.

Thanks again.
