We are at 2 maybe... Shit dealt with last night. We got a 40 acre FedEx. The guy that does it is a sub for the company under me he also has 5 smaller outlying properties. Guy calls me a 10pm says I am on sight. At 11:15 texts me and say the truck died going to to try to jump it with the skid he would let me know. Ok cool let me know what have left. Mind you the salt depot and truck is on sight and the other properties are within 3 blocks thing takes 2 hours maybe for a dusting. Guy texts me back that he hasn't done a dam thing yet. That he started the truck and let it warn up for 30 min the went to pull out and the truck died. Don't try to make sense of the math. Mind boggling

Unreal.
We had a sidewalk guy get the call to be at the shop at 1am this morning. He was going to ride in the small 650 salter and they we going to do sidewalks together. "No problem" he said, "I will be there". Get the call on the radio from the driver that the kid is a no show at 1am and he won't answer his phone.
WTF????!!! these guys are getting $16.50 per hour with pretty much a 6-7 hr min. I don't get it sometimes.

Edit- the kid was called at midnight. What the heck happened in a hour??

He went back to sleep. I pay my guys cash money $20/hr experienced or not. I almost prefer the inexperienced. Just like with tile, oh I have been plowing snow for 20 years. Then I go out watch them plow and I am like what hell are you doing? But anyway I stopped buying trucks and equipment cause I can't find anyone that wants to show up. If everyone routed shows up then my truck are really only out there to cover breakdowns or if people are falling behind then we will help them catch up or service calls. So these cats are really just sitting and playing on their phones or hanging with one of the other guys. Not a bad gig right. If I wasn't doing anything and someone said hey I will pay you $20/hr cash I would jump all over that shit. But it is everything I can do to keep a warm body in my trucks. I have had kids like your sidewalk guy, they come out get a fat pay check then don't want to show up cause they got money in their pocket. Then they are blowing up your phone the next storm wanting to work. I just tell them oh sorry I found someone to cover don't need you tonight but I will let you know if anything changes. I would rather my truck sit at home than help one these turds. That is why they are stuck in the shit life cause they have no drive, ambition,or work ethic.

Most of the sidewalk guys are millennials.
Shawn, you just described to a "T" the issues we have keeping guys. It's mostly the sidewalk shovelers/salters that we have a big turnover with. The runs are about 6-7hrs. They go out in pairs with a nice box truck to keep everything dry. Actual shovel time, 3hours. Rest of the time is in the truck driving to and from properties. It's not hard being a shoveler. 1-3" shovel, 3-6" snowblower, 6"+ RTV.
In the entire season, shovelers and salters get the most hours.

When I was a kid for 20 buck an hour I would actually fight for that job. You would have to run me off with a bat.
