Digital TCNA Handbook

. . . silence . . . um, yeah, nope.

C'mon TCNA join the 21st century . . .

An option for E-book or Digital Copy would be very useful.

I could print out any page or access on my Tablet or smart phone --

Add to that, it's environmentally sound and will save your minions some money.

Did you visit their (TCNA) website and look at the available publications, Stephen? Right in the middle of the page I see a CD containing not only the Handbook, but the ANSI standards and some more stuff. It's limited to one download to one computer, best I can tell, but for 45 bucks you can get everything you need in electronic format.

a CD CX??

no --

my laptop has no cd drive

my tablet has no cd drive

my smartphone has no cd drive

I'm asking about a downloadable digital format, not a cd.

It would be preferable not to carry around the book.

Also, cost should be less to deliver similar to Itunes Amazon etc.

. . . seems like an easy thing to provide . . . but you tell me sir.

You can download from the CD.

If you want it differently, send your request to the Executive Director, Eric Astrachan. His, and all the other staff's, email address is on their website. He may not fulfill your request, but he will listen to it.

I know they've gotten a lot of requests in the past about the Handbook format, mostly to continue to publish the paper version.

I like having a hard copy.

But emailing scanned half shadowed photocopies to Architects and GC's doesn't exactly inspire confidence in the guy telling them that yes movement joints are needed and 50% offset in porcelain isn't recommended.

I may go buy the $45 CD but I already get the hard copy sent to me from the NTCA.

Having a pdf version on your iPad or where you can email individual pages would be nice.

I downloaded a digital copy from their website. Found it in Publications section and once opening page for specific publication pick between print or digital version. Have to use a specific viewer with drm per their instructions.

Thanks Chris, their digital copy isn't tablet (or phone?) compatible yet.

Note: Digital copies are protected with Digital Rights Management (DRM) software and will have a visible watermark when printed. The purchase and use of digital copies will require the installation of software and a license (both provided by TCNA). The licenses have a one-time use and can only be installed on one computer (tablets are not supported at this time). For more information, please call 864-646-8453.

I'm surprised I wasn't told: For help, to go to Helen Wait.

Clearly, I'm not a priority over there . . . I didn't expect much.
It is ironic that the leading organization in terms of informational
thrust within the industry only offers a cd as digital format.

Makes me wonder how Henry Rothberg does what he does . . .
clones . . . pretty sure it's clones.

It would be great for the TCNA to develope an App for iphone/android platforms. Sell it on the app stores at the normal price, nobody is asking for handouts.

I don't know if they can sell yearly subscriptions though. Just an idea.

That said, I definitely still want my book available.

Here would be the appropriate person to make that request of. One request won't make it happen, it cost money. If there is a wide enough desire it might happen. Just remember it is an organization of American manufacturers.

Their downloadable digital edition works fine for desktop and laptop computers. I use them myself. I bet it would probably even work fine on tablets that run laptop-style operating systems like Windows.
I'm guessing the hold up for some tablets and phones is the TCNA's obsession with piracy prevention. To read the digital edition you can only do so using a very intrusive security viewer that prevents any copying (Lock Lizard). I was unhappy with how much it got it's claws into my computer. I thought it was a little unprofessional how many steps and detailed instructions and separate downloads we had to go through just to read the handbook.

I got the CD version a few years back when TCNA was giving them out at Coverings because the paper versions were not yet available for that year. I recall it requiring more than one phone discussion with their (TCNA) in-house geek to even get the thing installed and running on my desk top computer. And then there were the built-in obstacles to using it as Tom describes.

Last time they offered the CD while waiting for the printed version, I again tried to install it with no more success than the first time. I didn't bother calling for instructions, just put it aside and waited for the paper copy.

I think I understand some, but not all, their concerns, but I've still lobbied for a way to get that material more easily into more hands rather than making it a bit costly and difficult for the average tile installer.

More requests for an easier, less expensive way for that document to get into more installer hands would be a good thing, seems to me.
