Doing some research on Mapei's Flexcolor...and in one of the online pdf's for the product there is mention that it is not suited for grouting joints in natural stone?? DIY'er question...Why would it not be suitable for natural stone? Would that apply to any natural stone, such as flat cut jade pebble tile?

Please make sure you're referring to the information for FLEXCOLOR CQ. We've had other posts in this thread where people have dug up information from older/European products that aren't this product. I apologize for the fact that there is a lot of confusing info if you google flexcolor, but that's one of the downsides to being a worldwide supplier.

http://www.mapei.com/public/COM/prod...r_CQ_EN_lr.pdf is the official information about the product. There are no restrictions on grouting stone and, in fact, we've had great success with cleanability on stone applications versus some competitive products. It's always wise to do a mockup first to make sure you like the results.

Dan,
You've been super helpful! Just another quick question..in reviewing the CORRECT PDF for Flexcolor CQ...there is no mention of whether or not it can be used over an in-floor electric radiant heat system. What do you think?

Zivman, this link will show you where to buy in your area: http://www.mapei.com/US-EN/where-to-buy.asp

Sorry for the invalid URL, I have edited post 35 to be correct.

Kathleen, as long as the temperature doesn't exceed 125 degrees Fahrenheit, you should be fine with an in-floor electric radiant heat system. Just leave it off until the product has fully set (3 days minimum).

I haven't seen it at lowes... or menards in my area. Tried calling daltile with no answer; twice today. Just curious if any big box home improvement stores might be stocking this? or if it has even been shipped to dealers yet?

We just started rolling it out so finding someone stocking the product is going to be challenging. Lowes can special order it (although that process can be a little frustrating). Your best bet would be to ask your local Dal tile distributor to order it on their next truck. I sent you a private message in case you want to try the trial bucket for your backsplash.

Here is a video about the product for those that are interested: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vC4c...ure=youtu.be&a

Smile More questions about Flexcolor CQ:

Hi Dan!
How is your Flexcolor CQ launch going? I have a few "techie"- type questions about it. Is the "coated quartz", that is used in place of sand, coated so that it is the exact color of the grout? I am wondering this because, with sanded grout, I don't like how you can see the darker specs of sand showing through the lighter colored grout. And sometimes the sand seems to have a pinkish-beige color that seems to affect the color of the grout. At least this is the problem I seem to be having in trying to find just the right white grout. So I am hoping that your Flexcolor technology eliminates that problem!

I did watch the video you posted a link to (above) and took a good look at the close-up of the grout joints where they show the stain test. It did look like the "sand" (I assume the quartz) particles were exactly the same shade as the rest of the grout, but it was hard to tell for sure.

Have all the colors come out yet? Is the white out? Do you know how it compares to your other whites by any chance (brighter, greyer, cooler, warmer, cleaner, etc?) Will you have different sample colors for the Flexcolor CQ than your other grouts? If so, will the dealers have them yet?

I really want to use a premium type grout if possible. I have gone through so many different types and colors of grout on my sample boards (including 4 of Mapei's!), so please understand if I ask a lot of questions before deciding to spend more money on yet another grout.

Thanks so much.

I see the data sheet now states 3 days for cure before water immersion vs the videos mentioning of 6-7 days which is a great improvement. The only thing that has me worried is the 5-10 minutes to get on it. We will soon see. Otherwise, I am very excited about this product.

Some good questions here, I'll do my best to explain. The coated quartz particles are the color of the product. In fact, it gives the grout its color because it is used in place of the free pigment that most of our competitors use. When you're done cleaning Flexcolor CQ you will see that the color has stayed in your grout because it's not in your washup water.

All 26 colors are available. We have two colors that qualify as white, color 00 which is just called White and color 038 which is called Avalanche. Avalanche is slightly lighter and less yellow. Here is a link to our color chart:

http://www.mapei.com/US-EN/coloured-grouts-list.asp

Flexcolor CQ is available in:

38 Avalanche
00 White
77 Frost
13 French Vanilla
14 Biscuit (the color we sent out in the trial)
93 Warm Gray
01 Alabaster
02 Pewter
27 Silver
19 Pearl Gray
11 Sahara Beige
09 Gray
47 Charcoal
10 Black
49 Light Almond
94 Straw
15 Bone
39 Ivory
35 Navajo Brown
41 Irish Cream
05 Chamois
06 Harvest
44 Pale Umber
74 Camel
37 Terra Cotta
42 Mocha

Fish, good catch on the difference between the TDS and the video. MAPEI is comfortable with the 3 day recommendation based on how the product is likely to be used in real world applications and how it compares to similar products in this category. Unfortunately we put together videos and printed materials weeks to months before the product officially launches so there is always some touching up to do on the details.
