Marrying drywall to Hardibacker

Probably a repeat question, sorry.
Using 1/2" (7/16) Hardi backer for tub surround. Bathroom walls 1/2" drywall. Where backer meets drywall there is slight unevenness 1/16".
Best to marry and float with tape, drywall mud, thinset, then waterproofing....or, tape, mud, waterproofing...or hardi tape, thinset, waterproofing? Or some other method? Thank you.

Tape and float with thinset, then tile over it.
