1967: USS Liberty
Here's another historical incident that I must have slept through...

Quote:
Beginning before dawn on June 8, Israeli aircraft regularly appeared on the horizon and circled the Liberty.
The Israeli Air Force had gained control of the skies on the first day of the war by destroying the Egyptian air force on the ground. America was Israel's ally, and the Israelis knew the Americans were there. The ship's mission was to monitor the communications of Israel's Arab enemies and their Soviet advisers, but not Israeli communications. The Liberty felt safe.

Israel also paid reparations of $6.7 million to the injured survivors and the families of those killed in the attack, and another $6 million for the loss of the Liberty itself.
|
I wonder where the money came from in the first place?

Gulf of Tonkin.
Is the third man from the left in the bottom row giving the finger?

Yes, the finger is presented but (buzzzzz) the Gulf of Tonkin incident is not the correct answer.
Hint. That finger presentation is the only North Korean/US bit of diplomacy that I can agree with since.
It is also possibly one of the reasons why Bill Clinton sits so stupidly devoid of any personality or life during this photo-op with NK leader what's-his-face when Clinton visited NK recently on behalf of two Korean/American journalists.

Guess number 2 (after some research): The Pueblo incident.

I wonder if Clinton got to tour the museum ship while he was there?

Front row, far right.
John McCain is a remarkable fellow.
He managed to be captured and detained by both the North Koreans and the North Vietnamese at the same in two different places. Either that or he was employing a body double.
Impressive none-the-less.

The fellow in the back, far right, has his hand on the shoulder of the man in front, and is also giving the finger.
Kinda reminds me of the incident with Jeremiah Denton. He was forced by the North Koreans to give an interview on camera, blinked his eyes in Morse code to spell out the word "torture".
