I recently cleaned my 17 year old shower tiles and after I was done a I noticed some dark spots in the grout. Upon closer examination the dark spots were actually missing grout. These spots of missing grout a quite small in size, (about 1/16" diameter and range in length 1/16"- 3/16" in diameter) and there are not many of them. I'd estimate about 6-8 spots on all three walls of my bath/shower. The rest of the grout looks to be solid and in very good condition and there are no loose tiles. Does this sound like the it should be all completely re-grouted or can I have just the few spots of missing grout repaired? Thank you king
I would just regrout the small area's if your tile isnt loose and water hasnt damaged the wall behind it.
you might be able to salvage it from future damage.

Brian, thanks for your reply. The grout around the spots of missing grout is solid, so can I just push some new grout into the small holes of missing grout or do I need to remove the old grout "all around" the small holes and then apply new grout? Also, as I stated the overall grout and the tiles seem to be in excellent condition, as I have just done an extensive cleaning of them. Can I at this point seal the grout, (the tiles/grout are about 17 years old). If so, what type of sealer should I use? When I've looked at grout sealers, I've seen two basic types, penetrating and nonpenetrating and within the penetraiting sealers I've seen a hugh difference in pricing from $4.00 to $100.00. at this point pushing new grout into the small voids wouldn't hurt.
as far as sealing your grout now it might not help too much at all.
being that your grout is so old I dont know if it would help much,
maybe one of the sealer pros can answer that q.

Sealing will help keep the grout cleaner longer, but if you are looking to improve the grout's water proofing, sealers won't do that.
We are partial to the sealing products sold in our on-line store. However, if you need something quick, check out Dupont's line of sealers. I wouldn't spend $100 a bottle for anything that you have to re-apply yearly, though.
